On September 28, 2010, The National Research Council (NRC) published its long-awaited report evaluating over 5,000 doctoral programs in 62 fields at 212 universities in the United States.

The Mechanical Engineering department was ranked solidly in the top 10 Mechanical Engineering departments in the Nation by the NRC survey.   UCSB's ME department had a ranking range which entered the top 5 M.E. departments in the country!  We are especially proud of the fact that since the last NRC survey in 1995, the department has had a tremendous gain in the rankings, moving from 41 in 1995.

As the data is extensive, and the analysis tedious, more information on the NRC assessment, including a comprehensive breakdown of figures for all campus graduate programs, is available at the Graduate Division web site: here.  Alternatively, detailed ranking information is available as follows:
1. Goto http://www.phds.org
2. Under "Custom Graduate School Rankings," select Mechanical Eng.
3. Under "Choose Your Own Priorities," click "5" for "Research Productivity" or for "NRC Quality Measure"
4. Click 'Rank'

All five departments in the UCSB College of Engineering -- Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering -- earned ranking ranges within the top ten in the country.
