Exploring Gravity’s Effect on Life

Date:

Monday, May 13, 2024 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Location:

ESB 1001

Speaker:

Professor Karl H. Hasenstein

Understanding biological responses to gravity includes attempts to reduce and enhance gravitational conditions. I will discuss gravitational effects, and ways to compensate gravity, gravity sensing and response mechanisms in plants, the design of space experiments and effects of high-gradient magnetic fields. Examining biophysical effects benefits from gene expression studies, including ways to extract mRNA at high spatial resolution. The results illustrate that plants, like humans, sense and adapt to different gravity conditions and are well suited to grow on the Moon or Mars.
