Battery Fast-Charging for Affordable and Sustainable Electrification
Smaller, faster-charging batteries are the answer for affordable and sustainable electric vehicles (EVs) for everyone, everywhere. The ability to rapidly replenish energy is profoundly important for reducing EV cost, lowering demand for critical minerals, and delivering gas-station experience for users. However, 10-minute charging of today’s batteries requires lengthy pre-warming in cold conditions and faces safety challenges in hot environments. In this talk, I will reveal that fundamentally fast charging is not a chemistry problem but a heating problem. Subsequently I will introduce an asymmetric temperature modulation (ATM) approach that enables 10-minute charging of lithium-ion batteries across a wide temperature range, -60°C to +75oC, while maintaining remarkable cycle life. This is achieved through a novel cell structure capable of rapid and controlled thermal stimulation. Overall, this development points to a new paradigm in battery design and thermal management—without having to trade-off among fast charge, safety, lifetime, and cost.
