Abstract:  The scope of this seminar is transport of scalar quantities (e.g. additives, heat, reactants) in deterministic flow systems.  This is the common denominator in a great diversity of industrial fluid systems of size extending from microns to meters. Examples range from the traditional mixing and heat transfer in viscous flows via compact processing equipment to micro-fluidic systems and thermal-management schemes for micro-electronics. Key question always is how to achieve optimal performance (efficient mixing, thermal homogenization, maximum heat-transfer capacity). To this end insight into the transport properties and system dynamics is essential. Basically two ways exist to describe and analyze these systems: the Eulerian and Lagrangian perspective. The former investigates transport in terms of the spatio-temporal evolution of the scalar field; the latter in terms of scalar fluxes and transport paths. Methods and techniques from both perspectives are applied for the analysis of a number of realistic transport problems. Furthermore, a generalization of the Lagrangian framework for transport studies to heat transfer is presented. Host: Prof. Igor Mezic
