The Alleyne Bioinspiration Collaborative (ABCLab) is broadly interested in what materials, structures, and systems in nature (specifically those found in arthropods) can help us more efficiently design novel technologies. In this presentation I will present the Bioinspired Design process we use to study the multifunctionality of cicada and fly wings, burying beetle elytra, click beetle clicking hinge, and leafhopper brochosomes. Functionalities I will discuss include wettability, antimicrobial activity, contact mechanics, iridescence, material elasticity, etc. I will discuss the fundamental research we do, what constraints might determine functionality, how we prototype new materials and structures based on our findings, and how our new designs can help us understand how multifunctionality in insects evolved. Dr. Marianne Alleyne is an assistant professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Dr. Alleyne received a B.A. in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley, an M.S. in Entomology from UC Riverside, and a Ph.D. in Entomology from UIUC. She was an entomology research scientist and lecturer at UIUC for 15 years until recently transitioning to her current tenure-track position. She teaches Insect Physiology, Insect Pathology, Bioinspiration, and Bioinspired Design. Throughout her career, Dr. Alleyne has been committed to science communication and science policy, and was recently elected into the presidential line of the Entomological Society of America. Two recent papers from the ABCLab and collaborators: Nonlinear elasticity and damping govern ultrafast dynamics in click beetles. 2021. O. Bolmin, J. J. Socha, M. Alleyne, A. C. Dunn, K.
