The Mechanical Engineering Department has adopted the following computing and network security policy in an effort to ensure the security and appropriate use of all computing and network resources for the wired networks. The Department authorizes the computer support staff to restrict computer/network access on the wired network to any individual or computer if any of the following conditions are met:
- Copyrighted materials are being illegally distributed over Mechanical Engineering networks. The University of California is committed to upholding the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
- A computer is found to be running unlicensed software. Please note that it is the responsibility of the computer user/users to provide proof that all software has appropriate licensing.
- Excessive network bandwidth is inhibiting the use of network services by other computers.
- A computer or device is found to be using an unregistered or unassigned IP address.
- A computer or device is allowing unauthorized or anonymous access to UXSB networks addressed (example: proxy server, guest wifi's, NAT.), All responsibility for any violations will be the responsibility of the one who set up such system.
- UCSB's ITS requests such action. Such actions may include spamming, electronic currency mining, running an insecure system etc...
- A User removes any Computer/Printer/Network Equipment from its physical location within the Department that was purchased with UCSB funds. Equipment removed from the Department for use in an Off-Campus Location should be authorized and documented.
- A UC owned computer is not in compliance with the Secure UCSB requirements.
In addition to the above criteria, an administrative account for use by the computer support staff maybe requested on a UC owned system if there is an external intrusion, or suspected infringement of the department's computer/network use policy. Personally owned computers are the sole responsibility of the owner.
