The W.M. Keck Foundation has awarded the UCSB campus $1,000,000 for a
project entitled: "Nanoelectrofluidic Systems: New Tools for
Nanoparticle Analysis." The PI's are: Sumita Pennathur (ME), Frederic Gibou (ME),
Todd Squires (ChemE), Paul Atzberger (Math and ME), and Andrew Cleland (Physics).
We are very excited about this team, and about the scientific
breakthroughs that this sort of funding will enable. The abstract of
this new project is given below:

long-awaited report evaluating over 5,000 doctoral programs in 62 fields
at 212 universities in the United States.

The list of 2010 MacArthur Fellows was released at 12:01 a.m. EST,
Tuesday, September 28, and high school science educator and Dos Pueblos
Engineering Academy Director Amir Abo-Shaeer is among the 23 recipients. Abo-Shaeer earned both his Bachelor's and Master's in Mechanical Engineering at UCSB.

In the weeks after the Deepwater Horizon accident, as plumes of oil rose
from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico to form vast slicks on the sea
surface, Igor Mezic of the University of California, Santa Barbara,
decided to figure out a better way of predicting how that oil would
spread.
