Title: "Physical processes of sediment transportation under different flow regimes: Experimental and theoretical studies"

Abstract: The process of erosion, suspension and deposition is a complex flow system involving many physical parameters, which include the properties of sediment particles and turbulence. For a better understanding of the process, flume experiments were conducted under controlled conditions at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. A special hydraulic flume and data acquisition system were fabricated to carry out the experiments. Many projects, interdisciplinary in nature, have been completed making use of the flume. The results to be discussed in this presentation have generated very encouraging response from fluid dynamists, engineers, statisticians and geologists, and have helped them to develop/improve theoretical models.

Bio: Soon after obtaining a Ph.D. Degree (1976) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur in Applied Mathematics (Fluid Mechanics), Professor B. S. Mazumder joined the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta to work on sedimentological fluid dynamics. Since then, Professor Mazumder has been working on various problems in Applied Fluid Mechanics of inter-disciplinary nature. His main interests are in the areas of turbulence, sediment transport modeling, wave-current interactions, convection-diffusion process, flow visualization and image processing, navigation hydraulics, flow and heat transfer. He took initiatives and was instrumental in inducting very sophisticated equipments for his laboratory, and carry out experiments on sediment-fluid interactions and digital imaging. He has published about 80 research papers in the national and international reputed journals like JFM, JHR (IAHR), JHE (ASCE), Sedimentology, Advances in Water Resources, Journal of Sedimentary Research, Sedimentary Geology, etc. He is a reviewer for several journals. As a Visiting Scientist he has worked in USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Italy and other places.
